Chatbot for lawyers and law firm websites
A chatbot for lawyers answers practice area, fee and process questions from your own website, asks the intake questions your staff would ask and books consultations into an attorney calendar, day and night. ChatBotWidget gives general information only and hands urgent or case specific matters to your team.

The first call happens on your website, at any hour
People look for a lawyer after something has gone wrong, and a lot of that happens in the evening or at the weekend. If the website cannot answer, they fill in three contact forms and hire whoever calls back first. The chatbot keeps that first conversation with your firm.
-
Practice area answers
Which matters you take, which counties and courts you cover, fee structure and what to bring to the first meeting, all from pages you already publish.
-
Structured intake
Matter type, state, key dates and how to reach them, asked the same way every time and saved as a lead with the full transcript.
-
Consultation booked
Your Calendly or Cal.com link opens with the details filled in, so the consultation is in the attorney calendar before your office opens.
-
Urgent matters to a person
Arrests, court dates and deadlines trigger a handoff, so a human follows up first and the bot never improvises on a live case.
Intake questions by practice area
A starting set many firms use. Keep intake short, about the matter and the timeline, and leave the merits of the case to the consultation. You write these into the bot instructions in plain English and change them whenever you like.
| Practice area | Questions the bot asks | Next step it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Personal injury | Type of accident, state, date, medical treatment, insurance contact so far | Free consultation booking |
| Family law | Divorce, custody or support, county, whether papers have been filed | Consultation with the family team |
| Criminal defense | Charge type, county, next court date, whether the person is in custody | Immediate handoff to staff for anything urgent |
| Estate planning | Will, trust or probate, state of residence, rough timeline | Planning call booking |
| Immigration | Visa or status type, current location, any upcoming deadline | Consultation booking, deadlines to a person |
| Employment | Employee or employer, state, what happened and when, still employed or not | Case review booking |
Statutes of limitation and filing deadlines vary by state. The bot does not calculate them. It flags the date and passes the matter to a person, which is how a customer service chatbot with human handoff should behave in any regulated field.
Legal information, never legal advice
The questions bar counsel ask about chatbots come down to supervision, confidentiality and not giving advice. ABA Formal Opinion 512 treats generative AI like any other tool a lawyer must understand and supervise. These are the settings that keep the bot on the right side of that line.
Answers only from your pages
The bot answers from the practice area pages, FAQ and fee pages you choose, and links the page it used. If the answer is not there, it says so instead of guessing.
A standing disclaimer
One line in the instructions makes it state that it shares general information, that no attorney client relationship is formed and that a lawyer reviews every matter.
Handoff on case specifics
Questions like should I sign this or will I win go to your inbox with the thread attached. You set three rules, the bot follows them every time.
No training on your data
Your pages, conversations and leads are used only to answer your own visitors and are never used to train a language model.
Delete and export
Delete conversations or leads whenever your retention policy says so, and export intake leads to CSV for your records.
Roles for staff
Intake staff work the inbox, attorneys see the leads. Multi site adds roles and up to 10 seats for larger firms.
How the bot stores data, and what the language model provider receives, is set out on the security page.
From a late night question to a booked consultation
- 1
Install in two minutes
Paste one line of code into your site, or use the header plugin on a WordPress firm site. The bot reads your pages and is ready to answer.
- 2
Write the intake rules
Add your intake questions, disclaimer and handoff keywords in plain English. No flows to draw.
- 3
Connect the calendar and CRM
Link Calendly or Cal.com for consultations, and send leads to HubSpot, Pipedrive or any intake system that accepts a webhook.
- 4
Review the week
Read the conversations, see which questions it could not answer and add the missing page. Answers get better with each fix.

Chatbot, live chat service or virtual receptionist
Firms usually compare three ways of covering the website after hours. Each fits a different firm, and plenty of firms combine a chatbot with a phone answering service.
| Point | Staffed live chat service | Virtual receptionist by phone | ChatBotWidget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who answers | Outsourced chat agents | Outsourced receptionists | An AI chatbot trained on your pages |
| Hours | Depends on the contract | Usually 24/7 | Always on |
| How you pay | Typically per chat or per lead | Typically per minute or per call | Flat monthly plan from $24 |
| Knows your fees and process | From a script you supply | From a script you supply | From your own website, updated on re-sync |
| Books consultations | Often, by hand | Often, by hand | Directly into Calendly or Cal.com |
| Best for | High volume firms wanting a human voice in chat | Firms that get most new matters by phone | Firms that want instant answers and intake on the site |
Pricing models differ a lot between chatbot vendors too. The breakdown of what an AI chatbot costs shows how per seat, per resolution and flat plans behave as traffic grows, and the AI sales agent page covers the qualifying logic in more depth.

Law firm chatbot questions
Something else on your mind? Write to [email protected].
Can lawyers use chatbots on their website?
Yes. Law firms use website chatbots to answer questions about practice areas, fees and the consultation process, to collect intake details and to book consultations. The chatbot gives general information from your own pages, not legal advice, and an attorney stays responsible for supervising it like any other nonlawyer assistant.
Is it ethical for a law firm to use an AI chatbot?
It can be, when the firm supervises it. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024) says lawyers using generative AI must keep duties of competence, confidentiality, communication and supervision in mind. In practice that means clear disclaimers, no legal advice, careful handling of intake data and review of what the bot says. Check your state bar rules on advertising and solicitation too.
Can a chatbot give legal advice?
It should not, and ChatBotWidget is set up so it does not have to. It answers from the pages you publish, such as practice area and FAQ pages, and you add an instruction that it gives general information only. Questions about a specific case go to an attorney through handoff or a booked consultation.
How much does a law firm chatbot cost?
ChatBotWidget starts at $24 a month billed yearly for one website that answers questions. Consultation booking, intake leads sent to your CRM and webhooks start on Business at $49 a month billed yearly, or $99 monthly. Firms with several office websites use Multi site.
Will a chatbot keep client information confidential?
Conversations stay in your own workspace, encrypted in transit and at rest, and your content is never used to train a language model. You can delete conversations and leads at any time and sign a data processing agreement in the panel. Many firms still tell visitors not to share confidential case details before an engagement.
Can the chatbot book consultations with an attorney?
Yes. The Book a meeting action offers your Calendly or Cal.com page with the visitor name and email filled in, so a paid or free consultation lands straight in the right calendar. It comes with Business and higher plans.
What happens with urgent matters, like an arrest or a court date tomorrow?
Add words such as arrested, custody, court date or deadline as handoff keywords. When a visitor uses one, the bot stops qualifying, shows your phone number from your pages and passes the conversation to your inbox with the full thread, so a person follows up first.
Ask it what a new client would ask
Enter your firm website and ask about fees, consultations and your practice areas the way a prospective client does at 10 pm.
