How much does an AI chatbot cost? Pricing models compared

An AI chatbot for a website costs from about $24 to several hundred dollars a month. What you pay depends on the pricing model: per seat, per resolution or per plan.

An AI chatbot for a business website typically costs from about $24 a month for a single site to several hundred dollars a month for multiple sites or agencies. The real cost depends less on the sticker price than on the pricing model, because seats, resolutions and credits grow differently as your traffic grows.

This article explains the four pricing models you will meet, shows how each behaves at low and high volume, lists the costs nobody puts on the pricing page and ends with a simple way to estimate what a chatbot is worth to you.

The four ways chatbots are priced

ModelYou pay forCheap whenExpensive when
Per seatEach team member who uses the toolSmall team, few agentsThe team grows, even if the bot does the work
Per resolutionEach conversation the AI resolvesLow trafficTraffic grows, the bill grows with it in a straight line
CreditsA wallet of units, each answer uses a varying amountSimple questions with short answersLonger answers or larger models use more credits than expected
Plan with allowanceA fixed monthly price for a stated number of replies and actionsSteady traffic, predictable budgetYou need far more than the largest plan

Per seat pricing

Seat pricing comes from the live chat and helpdesk world, where every agent needed a login. It makes sense when people do the answering. It makes less sense for an AI chatbot, whose whole purpose is that fewer people answer repeat questions. You end up paying for the team size even as the team spends less time in chat.

Per resolution pricing

Here you pay a fee each time the AI closes a conversation without a person. It looks fair and cheap in a trial. The catch is that cost rises in a straight line with success: the better the bot works and the more traffic you get, the larger the invoice. Budgeting a seasonal peak is also hard, because you only know the number after the month ends.

Credit wallets

Credit systems sell you a balance and deduct units per message. The problem is not the idea but the exchange rate. Different models, longer answers and attached files often consume different amounts, so a plan that says thousands of credits may mean far fewer real answers. Read the small print for how many credits one typical reply uses.

Plans with a stated allowance

A plan states in plain numbers how many AI replies and action calls you get each month, plus a daily cap that protects you from a sudden spike. You know the maximum you will pay before the month starts. This is the model ChatBotWidget uses.

What ChatBotWidget costs

Every plan is a subscription, billed monthly or yearly. Yearly billing halves the monthly price. There are no credits, no per resolution fees and no setup charges.

PlanMonthly billingYearly billing, per monthAI replies a monthAction calls a monthBots

Business$99$49 ($588 a year)1,5001,5001
Multi site$299$149 ($1,788 a year)4,5004,5005
Agency$799$399 ($4,788 a year)12,00012,00025

The entry plan covers one website with 300 pages and 20 files of knowledge. Actions such as tickets, CRM leads, bookings and API calls start on Business. Multi site adds up to 5 websites, roles and analytics, and Agency is the white label plan for agencies with 25 client bots. Full details sit on the chatbot pricing page.

Costs that are not on the pricing page

The subscription is rarely the whole bill. Plan for these as well.

  • Content work. Someone has to update outdated pages and fill gaps the bot finds. Expect a few hours in the first month and less after that.
  • Integration time. Connecting a CRM or an order API takes a developer an hour or two if the system already has a webhook or REST endpoint.
  • Branding removal. Some vendors charge extra to remove their logo. Check which plan includes it.
  • White label. For agencies, white label is often reserved for custom enterprise quotes. We list it at a stated price on the Agency plan, see our article on white label chatbots for agencies.
  • Overages. Find out what happens at the limit. Some tools charge per extra reply automatically, others stop answering. ChatBotWidget hands the visitor to your team at the limit and suggests an upgrade in the panel, so you never get a surprise charge.

How to estimate what a chatbot is worth to you

Skip industry benchmarks and use your own numbers. You need three of them.

  1. Repeat conversations per month. Count emails and chats that ask questions already answered somewhere on your site.
  2. Minutes per conversation. Include reading, looking up the answer and writing back.
  3. Hourly cost of the person who answers. Salary plus overhead, divided by working hours.

Multiply the first two and divide by sixty to get hours a month. Multiply by the hourly cost. If the bot handles even a share of those conversations, compare that share with the plan price. Then add what is harder to count: leads captured at night and at weekends, and visitors who got an answer instead of leaving.

Your numberExample inputHow to use it
Repeat conversations a monthYour own countBase of the calculation
Minutes eachYour own estimateConversations x minutes / 60 = hours
Hourly costYour payroll figureHours x hourly cost = monthly value of the work

The value usually grows once the bot can act. An answer saves a reply. An action, such as an order lookup or a booked call, often saves a whole thread of messages. That is why the AI chatbot for business plans include actions and a higher reply allowance.

Monthly or yearly billing

Most chatbot vendors discount yearly payment, and the discount is usually the single largest saving available. On ChatBotWidget yearly billing costs half the monthly price on every plan, so the Business plan is $49 a month instead of $99. Choose monthly billing if you want to test the bot on live traffic for a month or two first, then switch to yearly once you know it fits. Moving to a larger plan takes effect immediately, with the price difference charged at the time of the change, so you never lose access to features while you wait for a renewal date.

The cost of having no chatbot

The comparison is not chatbot versus nothing. It is chatbot versus what already happens today, and today has costs too, they are just harder to see.

  • Questions answered by hand. The same delivery and pricing questions, answered one email at a time by someone whose time is worth more.
  • Visitors who leave. A visitor with one open question at nine in the evening often closes the tab rather than waiting until the next morning for a reply.
  • Leads that arrive cold. A contact form gives you a name and a sentence. A conversation gives you the need, the budget and a booked time.
  • Content gaps nobody sees. Without a list of unanswered questions, you do not know which information your website is missing.

None of these show up on an invoice, which is exactly why they are easy to ignore when you compare prices. Put a rough number on the first two before you decide that a chatbot is expensive.

Choosing the right plan size

  • One site, mostly support questions, no CRM or booking: Site.
  • One site that should capture leads, book meetings or check orders: Business.
  • Several sites or brands under one company, with roles and analytics: Multi site.
  • An agency that resells branded bots to clients: Agency.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI chatbot cost per month?

For a single business website, plans usually start at a few dozen dollars a month. ChatBotWidget starts at $24 a month billed yearly, or $49 billed monthly.

Is per resolution pricing cheaper?

It is often cheaper at low volume and more expensive as traffic grows, because each resolved conversation adds to the bill. A plan with a fixed allowance is easier to budget.

Is there a free plan?

No. You can try a one-time demo on your own website from our homepage, then choose a paid plan to install the bot.

What happens if I reach my monthly limit?

The bot stops generating new AI replies and offers visitors a handoff to your team. You see the usage in the panel and can move to a larger plan at any time.

Can I get a refund if I change my mind?

Payments are final. Refunds apply only to a duplicate charge, a proven unauthorized charge or a total service outage, so test the demo on your site before you subscribe.

Build a chatbot from your own website

Enter your address. The bot reads your pages and answers your questions with links to the source, so you can judge it on your own content.
